Digging up slabs and laying turf, then laying slabs somewhere else!

S had told us she didn't want the slabs left from the greenhouse removal, just needed it turfed.

We said we would do a swap with her, our turf for her slabs.

PJ dug up the turf and laid it onto a good pile of sods.

With the help of daughter C and her man R we have managed to lift the slabs, bring them home and take the turf to fill the empty area.

I don't have any photos of the new turf, a one minute video of three people Greek dancing (heeling the soil prior to laying turf) across some dirt does not count!!!

So here is the spot for the turf....... plus bricks and sticks and PJ's hands!!

The bricks were laid at the end of the present patio and then came the slabs..........

After about four hours solid work I have this wonderful extended patio.......... plus a wider border.......

Wasn't long before the 'Boss' came out to inspect - she gave it her seal of approval, and the chicken agreed as well!!!

Going Vegan

We had a superb meal!

A Vegan dish that PJ found ........... somewhere.  He bought the Recipe Book - VB6 - and so we went on a 'stroll' round the market to find ingredients - avacado, garlic......
PJ disappeared into the kitchen and I continued to sort out my sewing machine (failed miserably so it looks like a new machine is in the offing).

Slices of Aubergine covered with breadcrumbs sitting on top of tomatoes - delish!!
Two meals here so it made a good value meal.

VB6 = Vegan Before 6pm.  PJ says that if we eat vegan before six we can eat what we like afterwards and still lose weight .............. I told him cakes (of any kind) were not vegan ...... not impressed after all!!

Strawberry Jelly meets 21st Century

We decided some time ago to have some jelly and cream for pudding and today was the day.

It has poured with rain all day so I picked up the lovely red packet and proceeded to 'make the jelly'.

Not having made one for a long, long time as I started to break up the squares into a bowl,  I thought I would check the instructions while I waited for the kettle to boil.

1  For best results place the jelly cubes in a microwavable jug, add 100ml water and heat for approx. 1 minute (based etc. etc.)
2  Stir until completely dissolved and then make up to 570ml (1pt) with COLD water.
3  Pour into a mould or serving dishes and refrigerate to set.
Alternatively - place jelly cubes in a jug.  Add boiling water up to 285ml mark, stir until dissolved.  Make up to 570ml (1pt) with cold water.  Refrigerate until set.

I have never thought of using a microwave to assist in the making of a jelly!!!!

I remember when jelly was a Sunday treat and the jelly was always made last thing on Saturday night and then left in the pantry overnight until Sunday tea.  We always used the second method of making and very rarely had any problems.......... usually in the Summer when the pantry floor was not really cool enough.

Our jelly today was delicious, pity the fruit and cream were used earlier in the month for tea - the cream just wouldn't wait!!!

BT Infinity ......... RANT!

Sorry about this!
No!
I'm not!

We changed our Provider after 15years because of the bad service and tech support.
We researched and changed to BT
We had three weeks of pure heaven - Internet on demand, we moved into the 21st Century.
Then came the interruptions........worse than our previous ISP........... and the support........... 'off shore' ring any bells?
So we changed to Infinity - that amazing, super fast, incredible new internet service.
The engineers fitted it Tuesday by 13.00hrs.
Wednesday no internet from about 20.00hrs.
PJ was trying until 04.00hrs today.
We started trying again at 08.00hrs but nothing.

Phonecall to support (off shore) resolved nothing and, after an hour admitted he couldn't help and suggested we took the device to a local technician.  When we asked if we needed to take all our devices he said yes!!!!!!!!

Phonecall to support (off shore) and it is all fixed.
TWO HOURS!

We went out to fetch some milk - and a cake - guess what....................no internet!!!

I have my printer wired, PJ has his laptop wired - I have my own plug from this PC straight to the internet - 21st Century, super fast, efficient, really?!?!?!

So I am ranting, deservedly so .......................

I can do this job..........

At 12.30 hrs today this was the view from my lounge window......................................

New Fire Fitted

Sounds like three word Monday - but it isn't!!! (Simon Mayo on Radio 2 at 17.00hrs)

A friend came round to fit our fire.

We have already been to the local DIY shop and sorted some paint colours and wall paper samples to 'match' the fire.  I have more or less decided to paper the wall using this honey coloured paper.  The other ones that I brought home did not do anything for the room as it is north facing - needs a warm colour - so they have gone to the craftroom.

This paper looks as though it has been embroidered with gold thread and reflects the light at different angles.

Still thinking you understand ...... dark grey / black carpet ......... plain light honey coloured paint on the other three walls .........

Sunday in the Garden

After spending some time over the Bank Holiday clearing and tidying the front garden, we have trundled over to spend Sunday in the back garden of N's house.
We reckon it hasn't been touched for at least two years - decent planting but so overgrown ....... mind you we have seen worse.

Hydrangea, Climbing Rose, White Potentilla and Variegated Laurel on this side with a Rhus and Buddlia peeking out at the top!  There is also a plant gone to seed that looks like an Iris but we will have to wait until next year to see about that.

Variegated Weigelia, Yellow Potentilla and a Yellow Rose bush, plus an unnamed variety and a Red Weigelia populated this side.  The rose had already flowered, it was pruned ready to flower again before the end of the year, and everything else had bare branches trimmed.

We decided the best thing we could do for this clematis was to clear the under growth and 'hang' it up against the fence for the time being.  We found Crocosmia Montbretia escaping through the fence from next door as well as another Buddlia and a bush that had been cut back many times.

We chopped, sawed, strimmed, thinned and pruned our way round the garden while N kept us supplied with tea and coffee, even went to the local shop to buy some coffee for me (paid a fortune for a small jar but, I have to admit, I am worth it!), cos as we all know I work better with coffee.

N also did some baking so when we stopped for t&c we also had a muffin/cake, freshly baked.
We had piled all the cuttings onto the lawn which PJ had strimmed before we started.

I took a chair to cut the green stuff into small enough pieces to be bagged ready for collection but then found it easier to manage to cut and drop into the bag (inside the black bins) while standing up.

We didn't see the camera at first but then she was spotted! This produced the usual response from PJ!

So now we have found the borders we shall try to go back in a couple of weeks and dig it over and tie up roses and clematis properly.

We moved the patio furniture over to this side of the garden which left a rather large empty area............ can't be doing with that so we have decided at least two planted pots will fit nicely on there.
In picture 5, the strawberry plants along the edge can just be seen, but they pots they were in are frost damaged so we will transplant the strawberries into some troughs for the winter.  This will not only give a good edge, it means that N will be able to harvest the strawberries fresh and undamaged.

BTW
Did I mention that we also had a roast dinner a la fresco - sitting outside in the sunshine!!!  This has been a lovely way to spend Sunday if I do say so and PJ & I both agree on that!
The rain started to drizzle just as we were half way home and hasn't stopped very much since so the garden has been refreshed and some plants watered at long last!!

New! New!

Guess what we have!!!

You won't..........

Woo! Hoo!

Brand new ..............

Gonna be WARM this winter..............

Yeah!!!!

A brand new fire, really new, not just new to us but brand new!  So excited!  We hope it will be fitted on Thursday.
There is only one problem that we can see............ The colour is ALL wrong!

Tomorrow we are going out and now...... we are going to include a visit to the DIY shop, we need to decorate.  This means that we will have a brand new rug on the floor, and the downside is ....... more new curtains!  But we are going to enjoy ourselves....... we are....... we are, really.

....... and we will be warm in that cold weather that we call winter............
