We managed to go and see this film which was a wonder as PJ found his parents details on the 1911 Census and discovered Uncles and Aunts he didn't know about. He still wanted to go see the film and we spent a couple of hours in India - which sounds bad but wasn't as we could relate to most of their feelings at the culture clash. It was gently funny, sad but very good - I class it as a pleasant film, good to while away an hour or so, yes, very good.
Talking of the 1911 Census .......... Cousin Dorothy has my Grandfather's death as 1918 but on the Census it records Grandma being a widow........... what is afoot? had he left or was he dead??? I go in search of his death certificate now cos if I can't find it then he must be somewhere else .......... yes?
Memories of a Brummie girl from the fifties to date. These are my gift to the generations that come after me.

Changed Interface.................
How I do NOT welcome improvements!!! This blog has a new interface for me - does not affect my readers (what's that? thank goodness!) but it is now extremely difficult to navigate and I have not yet found what extras I have.
I upgraded my printer to a wonderful new one - not. I have been without a printer for four days!!!! Listen ........ when researching ancestors one needs a printer (ain't that the truth?)
One of the websites I have subscribed to includes an addition to grow one's 'tree'. Not unless Flashplayer is updated ............ flashplayer updated............ STILL DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!!! GRRRRRR!!!!
END OF MOAN~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That's a synoposis of my last few days. We went into town yesterday to go to the Library where, not only was the department we needed closed until Thursday, I also could not prove my identity so could not get a Library ticket. Yes! I did go on .... and on......... and on......
Yes I did say that it was easier for a foreigner to get a Library ticket than someone who has lived in B'ham all of 66 years!!
Today I feel exhausted and am looking forward to the pictures tomorrow - and a pizza - maybe I can relax a bit.
I am going to start scanning all my certificates and possibly then I can enter them somewhere into this blog .............. boring!
BTW I have a printout now of my Mother's family at the 1911 Census so will try to get the rest of the family although Grandad Holland is a bit more difficult.

Still Scanning ....................
This post has not been published because .... I just found it in the Drafts Folder!
I had decided to scan all my photos ... do you remember? Like the scanning this was a long time ago.
Since this time I have been conversing with a distant cousin - possibly descended from the lady standing in this photo!!
Wonders of the Internet!
I was very poorly so I did not enjoy scanning yesterday although during the course of this I found a family tree made up by a cousin (more later). I have also started retyping details that were enclosed with this copy and then visited South Africa via Google - good days work.
This is a photo of Great Grandma Holland (my Grandad's Mother) with her sister!!
PJ has started searching again for his ancestors but with so little to go on it's frustrating. I spent some time yesterday looking but ......... oooh!.....long time and little finds. (PJ has found his birth Sister since this posting.)
PJ is working on the shutters for the house today and plans to fasten them when he can get the ladders out of the garage, found a 'cat bed' while he was sorting - cheeky lodger, not paying rent!!!

I am now going to get the photos sorted and write about the associated memories, I may also add in some photos to previous posts - I suppose you want me to tell you when and where I do!!! lol

I have been out in the greenhouse but there is little that can be done as we are aware that sometimes there is snow at Easter!!!

Have been turning up hems on trousers, clean sheeting bed, making flowers out of ribbon, cross stitching and making cards. Busy, busy. Mind you, I would've achieved more if I hadn' t downloaded a brill game!!!!!! Very addictive game!!

and so to Uncle Fred ............
Uncle Fred and Auntie Gladys lived at 3 Ernest Road in Sparkhill, quite a small house and I only remember visiting it once as a child. There were two boys, older then me – young teenagers – and eventually we went down to the shed at the bottom of the garden and there was a wonderland there!! An electric train set all laid out on a table, magnificent! The table took up the whole space of the shed and the boys had to crawl underneath the table and up through a hole in the centre to operate the trains. They didn't know me but I was expected to climb through that hole and stand there admiring their train set and admire I did!!! I think that this is what made me want an electric train set of my own. Over the years I have seen many and envisaged how I would spend time making scenery etc., even planning at one time where it would go ............... I have a Christmas set now and my family bought me a whole village to go with it - I love it!! It's extra special to me because I can remember the buying of the village, going to Webbs and seeing the whole town!!!! But mine is extra precious because it is full of love.
Uncle Fred drove a truck but I did not know that until he had a heart attack and was not allowed to drive anymore – he was 58, too young to retire, only Gladys at home as his had all grown up. Mam was very worried about him at the time but then things calmed down again.
After Auntie Gladys died, Uncle Fred and Mam became very close again; after all they were the youngest two children. Uncle Fred used to keep budgies in his second bedroom and then he discovered he could paint and this took up the rest of his time. Ena had one of his paintings but I never achieved that status, he was a very good artist.
He went on holiday to Bowleaze Cove with Mam and Dad one year and I came down with Myra for a few days. He adored her and bought her this big oversized blue jumper, he thought it was a dress, and she lived in this jumper, wearing it as a dress with a belt round it. I remember visiting him at home once but then he passed on, the house was sold and another era ended …….. except for once …. His daughter, I think Dorothy, arranged for a big family party for the ‘French’ family. Most of us turned up and there must have been a good 100+, we couldn’t get over the fact that if John Richard had not married Ellen Hannah none of us would have been there!! It was a great evening and a good time was had by all as we renewed acquaintance with cousins long separated, even me with the two young sons of Uncle Fred! Mam had her photo taken with the youngest member of the French family, a baby girl of about six months.
All these contacts have now been lost again as, after we dispersed, no one from our side stayed in touch. I have often though to try to contact ‘Dorothy’ but all I know is that her husband was, at the time, the caretaker at Cranmore Infants school where the ‘bash’ was held, and now has no doubt retired.
I think that out of all the brothers, in looks and nature, he most of all resembled his father, my Grandad ………………

Repeat Posting? I dunno ..........
Some of this is a repeat so please forgive me …………………………
My Mam was the youngest child and had three brothers, Albert John, Charles Vincent and Wilfred ………… (for the life of me I can’t remember his second name). Nanna French had several more children, including twins but none that survived, two had spina bifida, so as you can imagine Mam was rather adored. She was very close to Uncle Fred as he was the youngest boy and all three boys were at some point in the Navy. Albert took his father’s name and Charles took his Mother’s maiden name – Vincent. My mother was named after one of my grand ma’s sisters, well the Ethel part was but why Ivy we’ll never know. All the boys lived local and we visited them and their families quite a lot and when we moved in with Grandad they also visited us a lot more, and the numerous cousins.
Uncle Albert and Auntie Eva had three children, John, Cyril and Eileen. Once again because I was a late baby most of my cousins were grown up and took the courtesy title of ‘Uncle’ and ‘Auntie’. Cousin John was known as ‘Big John and he was married to Norah and they had two children, Little John (or Johnny as we knew him) and Katrina. Big John looked a lot like Tommy Cooper and had the ‘French Nose’ and Norah was dark haired and very feminine, with such a lovely nature. Big John had his own sign writing business and was very successful. They lived in Old Lode Lane in, what seemed to me, a very big house with large round bays. I went to stay overnight there one Christmas school holiday; it was like living in a hotel to me and gave me a taste of the sort of life I wanted to aspire to. ‘Auntie Nora picked me up in the car!?! with Katrina & Johnny in the back seat and took us all back to their house. I was shown around and told to unpack – I was going to share Katrina’s room - I don’t know whether we shared a bed but in the back of my mind I think there were twin beds, as it was the big bedroom on the front of the house. Then when we came downstairs we had a drink and a biscuit and were left to play. Katrina had some beautiful toys and if I remember rightly we also played with Johnny’s as he had a race track of some sort. . After lunch, Nora took us into Solihull for some shopping. At this time in my life, Solihull was a small town not really accessible from Birmingham, it was the County Borough of Solihull so ordinary Brummies were not encouraged to go there. I can’t ever remember going there with Mam, it was just not the sort of place we went to. Any roadup – Nora, Katrina, John and I tootled off and I can only remember going into ‘Midland Educational’ shop which was on the High Street, by the hardware shop (I think it is Wetherspoons now). We bought paper and colouring materials from this shop and the bags were put in the boot and we came home to Nora’s house. I can remember us all drawing and colouring away for most of the afternoon, but when I looked at Katrina’s pictures …. well! She was younger than me but sooo talented, I did so wish I could draw like that – I bet even Johnny’s was better than my pathetic efforts – but Nora was very good and didn’t judge between us. When ‘Uncle’ John came home we had dinner and then watched television, so posh – big lounge and big telly and soft seating, French windows opening onto a big garden, you can imagine how I felt!! Later on when we went to bed I lay awake for ages, wishing I had a bedroom like this, wishing and dreaming. After breakfast next morning - at the table with cereal and an egg! - we played for a while longer and then I had to go home. I was allowed to take all my paper and stuff home with me but I so didn’t want to use them in case I could not replace them. As you can see, this little escapade had a big and lasting effect on me and I loved that family dearly.
When Katrina was married the first time, I think she divorced and married again, she had a big fairytale sort of wedding. I remember at the reception sitting with Uncle Albert and Auntie Eva, there was a lot of food and drink – all free – Mam & Dad got really merry and I was drinking whisky and orange in those days so I must have been in my teens but whether Gren was there I don’t know. We all got rather drunk, especially Mam and Auntie Eva, they were just so funny, we didn’t realise how bad they were until Auntie Eva asked what the train going passed outside the window was. Well! We couldn’t see no train but couldn’t convince her that there was no train, then we realised it was the reflection of the lights inside on the window and, cause she was drunk, they were moving as things do when you’ve had one too many!!! Cousin John took them home and then came back for us and took us home, Dad being incapable - John helped Mam put him to bed but no sooner were John and Mam back downstairs than Dad appeared in his pyjamas in the doorway and had to be put to bed again!!! All good fun and the topic of conversations for years to come.
John and Nora moved to Sheldon after Johnny had left home and then we lost contact. I did try to find them but even Eileen said she didn’t know where they were, such a shame.
Cousin Cyril was married to Gladys and had, eventually seven boys, very young children. I don’t remember them very much, only the youngest – he was a lovely baby, chubby and full of life. All the boys are married with families of their own, I hope that some of them have girls. Cyril & Gladys used to live in Ninfield Road, just off Stockfield Road. As with most of my cousins, I never really knew them as people.
Cousin Eileen was a single lady, working in an office so I never really saw much of her while I was growing up but she eventually married her long time sweetheart and then she became a stay at home wife and really blossomed. Mam used to go and visit every week until she moved to Druids Heath and then Eileen used to visit Mam. They became very close, more like Mother and Daughter than Aunt and Niece. I know that Mam thought the world of her and really enjoyed meeting with her, she was a brilliant cook, had a little dog (Sherry) and adopted a poor little duckling (Duckie). The duckling grew into a really good egg layer and she used to not only bring Mam eggs but also made the most fantastic sponges, my mouth waters at the thought of them. She lives in Bradnock Close, opposite the fire station in Billesley, and after Mam died I took to going and visiting her but gradually work took over, and so we only exchange the odd letter or two over the year and the inevitable Christmas card.

Memories:- at Auntie Edie & Uncle Charlie's ..................
This was another ‘fairytale moment really because I was always allowed to roam this long garden so long as I didn’t go out into the road – talking of which: just up from Uncle Charlie’s was a large piece of land which always had a couple of goats on it. It wasn’t fenced off and the goats were tied to a pole (by a large rope I might add!!) and the house on the corner of the junction of Haslucks Green Road and Redhouse Lane was a large, rambling, detached house with a large round bay on the front the bedroom had a large ROUND window to fit. Amazing piece of glass and soooo different.
Uncle Charlie had vegetables and fruit growing on his land and I think that they were quite self sufficient, I don’t know what his trade was, they were just there and here’s the best bit …….. I was allowed to eat anything I wanted to!!! Peas, strawberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries, plums – eeeeeeehhhhh! Not plums, yuk!!!!
That’s how I found out it was a damson tree!! Lol Often than not the ‘bird bath’ needed weeding and one time I brought some seeds to plant in there, they didn’t do much good, probably because the soil was so shallow and dry.
I can remember having a big party for John and Maureen when they got engaged and that Maureen, not being used to alcohol, had to be helped up the stairs – this was in Stechford so I suppose they were about the same age as Ena & Tony. Maureen was an Au Pair at a big house just down the road from Uncle Charlie’s and after they were married they lived in a caravan in the front garden until they moved into Cranmore Road in Shirley. Before they moved they began to build a house on some land that Uncle Charlie owned at the back of the Post Office down in Peterbrook Road, all gone now. I can remember one hot summer, no ……………. it really was this time – very hot - and poor Maureen was very pregnant with Elspeth, their eldest daughter. I had never seen a pregnant woman close up and I just loved her as she talked to me about the baby. She had to sit down a lot and could do very little to help so I did as much as I could, fetching this and that. They moved to Scotland later on, I don’t remember when but I know that it was when we lived in Hall Green, Ena had just finished with Bob Booth – my hero – and they introduced him to Betty (Maureen’s Sister). Bob and Betty hit it off, were married and moved to Scotland; maybe John and Maureen moved then, I know that they spent holidays with Bob & Betty after the marriage. John & Maureen had three girls and are very happy. They used to come down to visit and always called in to see Mam, indeed they were with her when we went round to tell Mam that Leanne had died. They stayed on for the funeral and were a great comfort to me, one needs family at that time.
John and Maureen had three girls, Elspeth, Moira and Judith. Mam and Dad went up for the weddings and had a wonderful time, I think they looked upon John and Maureen as their own children.
John was the son of Uncle Charlie’s first wife, she left Uncle Charlie with the boy and so when Auntie Edie married Charlie they adopted him.
There I have said it.
Mam promised Uncle Charlie that she would never tell John about it but I have not made that promise and I believe we have a right to know our roots whether it is good or bad. John was very loved by everyone, I know that I loved them both; they were like another brother and sister to me. Thankfully we are still in contact and correspond every Christmas.

This is the inside counter of Moseley Road Post Office - this building still stands today but I think it is not quite the same inside!!! My Grandad was a postman who delivered from here. I have photos of what went on behind the scenes
This is the Sorting Bay where all letters etc were sorted |
Can you see Grandad? He is seated just right of the pillar. |
I am posting some memories that have been typed for a couple of years, having now sort of coordinated photos and writings I might just get everything posted. May be out of sync but that's life!!!!

Making Cards Day
I am posting. .... I am just making sure I can edit OK. I have spent today making cards from a new book that a friend has sent through, it is Dutch so something different. I have also made up my packages ready to post tomorrow.
Memories:
Memories:
Uncle Charlie was married to Edie and they had a son called John – hence the nicknames for the other Johns – we spoke of him as Little John. They lived out in the country, with no running water or gas, just electric – which at the time I thought was weird as we had gas, fires and cooker. I cannot remember them ever visiting us but we used to visit them regularly and it had to be quite a co-ordinated trip. There were only a few buses out to Majors Green, run by the Midland Red bus company out of Stratford and they were, as the name suggests, big red double decker buses. I am sure they were just one an hour so we always had to be very coordinated, especially for the trip back home. I remember visiting when we had moved to Hall Green but cannot remember the trips before that, although I imagine we would have connected at
Haslucks Green Road
junction from the 37 (I shall post on the buses system at a later date). So off we would go to visit Uncle Charlie who lived in a bungalow set back from the road – 576 Haslucks Green Road – no longer there now as the land was sold after he died and new houses built. The path led down the side of the propery, under a damson tree, round a corrugated steel building (later it turned out to be a garage for his motorbike and sidecar!) then along the front of the bungalow into a yard with a leanto on the back. Thinking back it may have been a prefab like the ones on
Wake Green Road
, as there was just the one room and two bedrooms off.
When you came into the yard Auntie Edie had a large hen cage and she was renowned in the area for her eggs, selling them to the neighbours. Beyond the hens was a shed and beyond that another shed. This shed contained a polished piece of wood with a hole in it under which sat a large metal container with Jeyes fluid. On the back of the door was a hook on which held six inch square pieces of paper, usually the Radio Times!!! ……. This was the toilet ……. I didn’t like it much because there were lots of spider webs and it was dark, I think there was a light but it was only a bare bulb and not really helpful in the daytime as there was more light coming from underneath and over the top of the door. In the yard was a bird bath, very overgrown and Auntie Edie had planted small iceplants in there. So this is where I would go when I visited, and we were always warmly welcomed. Soon after we arrived I would be asked if I could go fill the bucket with water and I jumped at the chance. The water was fetched from the pump which was in the middle of the garden by the damson tree, a big old black pump with a large handle, just like the ones you see in the old cowboy films. In order for the water to come out the handle at the side had to be lifted up and down and I just loved using this, watching the water gush into the bucket ……. Magic! The fact that I had to carry the bucket all the way back to the kitchen did not figure in the equation, I just loved that pump.
Quiet Sunday
I am editing as and when I can.
We went for tea tonight at the local Harvester with Nade, Tara and Sergio - we have not seen each other since New Year and there was a lot to catch up on. So much talking, passing of information and soooo much eating!!! I think that place should remove the salad bar ...... so much choice and nothing to do while we were waiting for the main course ...... and talking. I am stuffed and really regret eating so much but it was a good time.
More Memories:-
This is my eldest brother Keith Edward who was born with Spinal Bifida.
He died aged 6 weeks and this photo was taken just after an operation to remove water from his back, apparently fluid travels from the brain down to the bottom of the spine and has to be removed. My mother is out of shot with her hand underneath the blanket to support him. This is the only photo we have of him.

How did that happen?!!??!!????
Don't ask me!
We waited in all day yesterday for a parcel that was delivered this morning cos no-one was in yesterday. ....... how did that happen? we were at home all day.
We went to town to change my cardigan ...... came out of the shop with two cardigans and a jumper. .... how did that happen?
We went to buy some inks for three printers. .... came out with a new printer and two sets of inks. ........ how did that happen?
People must be very desperate to clear their products off the shelves and keep their customers. I love it, it was certainly the best visit to town yet!!!!

Yeah!!! Started sorting photos, stories et al .....
I have just spent three hours sorting out photos, prepared recollections and FAQs. I should be better equpped now to update and bore people with my stories. I may get in touch with cousin Marie who lives in Bognor as I think that she is researching on my Father's paternal side of the family.
This is a photo of my mother's family.
Besides Nan and Grandad, there is Albert, Charles Vincent, Wilfred and Ivy Ethel, my beloved mother. I imagine that she would have been the most loved one of this family. Nan had several other children who did not survive, the eldest child was a girl who was born with Spinal Bifida. She lived a few days and not longer afterwards Albert John was born followed by Charles Vincent (taking his mother's maiden name of Vincent). There were two further babies and then Wilfred was born followed closely by my mother. My Nan was very concerned that my mother would survive and she was very cosseted for the first few years. My mother and Nan were very close and it must've broken Nan's heart when Mam sailed away to the other side of the world with a man she had only known six months! Mam never said that the family was well off but she certainly had an easy life, living in a large house first in Springfield and then in Moseley.

This is NOT Washford Mill!
I decided that I would catch an earlier bus into town to give myself time to go to the opticians before I attended my interview The bus was late, the roads were busy and I was panicking. ..... late for my first meeting never mind the opticians!!!!! I made it with time to spare and it was a very interesting couple of hours culminating in two tests. We shall know the results early next week, would be nice if I did succeed, but I am up against eight others.
So we met together to go to dinner for Catt's birthday - a cosy little pub out in the country, good food and a nice drive. When we arrived there was a sign to say the heating had broken down so we decided to go to another pub that I had visited years ago - The Washford Mill. I remember it as very olde worlde, just outside Wootten Wawen. So we turned left at the junction and I was sooo excited as I had wanted to go back many times. We drove right out into the country, no street lights, no houses, just twisty, turny road, snowy fields and stark, black trees standing threateningly against the tall, grey hedgerows. On we drove, meeting little traffic for several miles, till we decided that there was definitely NO pub down this road! Peter pulled to the side of the road and then "where has all this traffic cone from?" We returned to Wootton and turned into the Bull's Head car park. We had a lovely meal, although mine was a bit too peppery for me, and then we came home. We had hoped to stay at home for the next few days but the cardigan I bought in town is the wrong size so I shall return it tomorrow.
I do so hope that I can sort out my postings here and recall the ' good old days' during the next week.

Where's the snow gone?
We travelled along the dreary, mucky road to fetch the parts for the tumble dryer and as I looked around I wondered .......did the snow really happen? On Saturday evening the world was white as we returned Catt home, Sunday was still sort of white but today the muck and the rain are here. At training the snow still lies in my garden but in the tracks for the trains there is just slush where many male feet have walked.
The main man fixed the dryer - even with a painful arm he continues to perform his miracles. I was reminded of my Scripture (a man from the house of David shall sit upon the throne, and he will reign in righteousness and justice) and thought again of just how many people would not have felt the love if we had not been obedient unto God.
I have achieved very little today, the knitting I did had to be undone and the current needles are not long enough for the increased stitches, so it waits. BUT I have stitched a tiny bit more of my Angel- whilst I watched Gladiator, really enjoyed this film and he is very good.
I hope to have a better report tomorrow!!!

Nice,easy Sunday
You know the best laid plans of mice and men. ..... Weell, today was one of those. While we lay basking in the warmth of our bed, machinations were afoot. One phonecall and we were up and in the car, wending our way through the slush and cold to ensure that all was well with Catt Four hours later we came back to our little house and tv, back through the slush and the snow.
Conversations today have given me more determination to fulfill my main aim of recording recollections and memories. Some times the feeling that Mam is close makes me wish again that I could ask her the questions I never did while she was here but there you go. Brook is so hurting at the moment and she pours this pain into her blog; I think that this is so wonderful. The thought crosses my mind again that if I had had someone to talk to all those many years ago I would not need counselling 30 years after the event. .... Who can tell...... maybe one day I will talk it all through on here. Ginger does a brill job on her's; bringing to life a sweet young boy who has already suffered so much that people across the world unite in sending a card for him.

... and down came the snow!
So we stayed in bed until we were brave enough to get up and then I started to burn discs for Catt. Wouldn't you just know it!! Only enough for one and what to do now? So Catt had to come to the rescue. She managed to get some from HMV By the time Catt arrived the snow was falling, but lovely mommy had made chips and fish fingers - am I good or am I good! Came time to take Catt home to her own place, through the 3" of snow Always strikes me as funny (in a nice way) that it is only when it snows that people start driving slower.... managing to keep below the speed limit ...... are they watching the snow? . ...... or are they looking at the magical fairyland they are driving through? Nah! Trying not to crash into anything! but for one moment there. ........
So we sat watching tv and, eventually, we had about 6" of snow and then ..... then. .... it rained!

So Cold
The weather has now turned to Winter - it was -10C last night. Yesterday was a good day We managed to brave the cold and go into town - strange that no matter where you live, the local city is 'town'! I collected my pretty new reading glasses and then went to spend a couple of hours with George Clooney and his descendants. We cried a bit and laughed abit more but I found the subject quite morbid. We had a pizza at PizzaExpress - Orange 2 for 1 is there as well! We shared a table in the corner watching life go by, it will be good in the summer - a fashion show. We were hine quite early so watched a couple of Foyle's War I thought maybe we were getting near the end of the discs but pj said we are still on series three- brill!
PJ was froze when he came home today but had enjoyed himself - I think Princess Elizabeth(6201) is more of a joy to him than Clun Castle. I stayed to watch a silly film while pj retired for the night, says he will try to see the dr tomorrow so he must be in sone pain.
I have a small succes to record - I have managed to scan some photos as jpgs. What's that? It is a significant success for as I can only upload jpgs to my group. Tried making a bargello card but it's not v good - will have to try again, hopefully tomorrow.
I am late posting now for my memories:-
